Meet Deborah Draves Legg

I've always been curious about what it means to be human.
Why do we do the things we do? What is the reason for life's challenges? How do our experiences shape the way we see ourselves and the world? And what becomes possible when we begin to recognize the patterns influencing our lives?
These questions have accompanied me through a lifetime of nursing, coaching, teaching, traveling, living abroad, and, of course, like all of us, meeting life's unexpected detours.
A Journey Through Life's Many Thresholds
I spent 30 + years working as a registered nurse, including neonatal and pediatric intensive care, critical care transport, and hospice. My nursing career gave me an extraordinary opportunity to witness the human experience at its most vulnerable, from the beginning of life to its final moments.
I learned a great deal about courage, uncertainty, resilience, grief, and the things that matter most to us. The greatest lesson was how much living happens while we're busy preparing for what comes next. Those experiences eventually led me to explore other ways of supporting people as they navigate life's transitions.
In 2006, my husband, Steve, and I moved to Costa Rica, where we purchased a former dairy farm near Arenal Volcano and created Leaves and Lizards, a retreat center surrounded by horses, rainforest, and spectacular natural beauty. It was there that my relationship with horses developed into a professional calling.
I discovered how much we can learn about ourselves through experiential interactions with horses, particularly when we become curious about our own responses, assumptions, and patterns. What began as an exploration became a new direction for my life.
Horses, Humans, and the Art of Being
Since 2007, I've facilitated retreats, coached hundreds of individuals, and taught equine-supported learning internationally. My work has taken me to the United States, Costa Rica, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Denmark, Portugal, Chile, France, Italy, and Ireland.
Along the way, I've had the pleasure of learning from remarkable teachers, collaborating with other professionals, and developing an extensive repertoire of experiential approaches. My background includes advanced Eponaquest training, transformational coaching, Power of the Herd, sand play, embodied awareness, and end-of-life support.
I also draw inspiration from the Medicine Wheel, the Hermetic Principles, creative expression, and the many ways people make meaning from their experiences. I'm particularly interested in the relationship between what we think, what we feel, and how we respond to the world around us.
Horses have an extraordinary way of bringing those relationships into our awareness. They respond to what is happening in the present moment, often inviting us to notice something we might otherwise overlook, and they continually remind me that no matter how much experience we have, we're always learning.
A New Cycle
After selling Leaves and Lizards in 2020, Steve and I returned to the United States, where I continued coaching, teaching, and supporting people through life's transitions. In 2025, we returned to Costa Rica and began another chapter.
Today, Eponicity is located on our 25-acre farm in the mountains of Costa Rica's Southern Pacific Zone, at a refreshing elevation of approximately 2,500 feet.
We're situated above the beach communities of Dominical and Uvita, home to Marino Ballena National Park and the iconic Whale's Tail, where humpback whales migrate to give birth to their young. To the north, the majestic Chirripó Mountain rises above the valley as part of the Talamanca range, a region of cloud forests and remarkable wildlife, including the resplendent quetzal, bellbird, and elusive tapir.
Our farm is bordered by the crystal-clear waters of the Pacarito River, which tumble over a magnificent waterfall before cascading through a series of smaller falls and a boulder-strewn canyon. Pastures, fruit trees, rainforest, and mountain views surround us.
And, of course, there are the horses. It's a wonderful place to live, learn, explore, and simply BE. (Yep, this is a real picture of our farm!)

Every person who comes to Eponicity brings a different story, perspective, and intention.
Some are navigating a significant life transition. Others are interested in understanding themselves more deeply, exploring their spirituality, or discovering new ways of approaching familiar challenges.
Some come to participate in an immersive retreat, while experienced equine facilitators may come to expand their professional toolkit through personalized mentorship.
My approach is to meet people where they are. Drawing from a wide range of experiential methods, I create opportunities that encourage curiosity, self-awareness, and new perspectives. Horses, nature, creative expression, and embodied learning are often part of the experience.
There is room for laughter, reflection, vulnerability, and the unexpected, and sometimes, the most meaningful discoveries happen when we allow ourselves to step beyond what we already know.
